The Summer Home Park Corporation was formed in 1959 by a number of concerned SHP homeowners who wanted to preserve and purchase the SHP community properties and the undeveloped land from the Eva family. Stock was sold and some of the properties were logged in order to pay for the purchase. Grant Morrow was the first president. The only source for income in those days was rent from the five rental cabins next to the Lodge, renting the Store and the occasional sale of a lot. The beach was not owned by SHP, but rented from Mrs. Anita Bower until it was purchased in 1988 with monies raised by additional stock sales. Also included in the purchase were the Hilton beach and the land between River Road and the Russian River. This land included Covey’s Field which was subsequently leased to Chateau St Jean winery and they planted Chardonnay grapes. For 20 years the vineyard lease provided a nice income stream to the Corporation. Over a number of years the Corporation has been able to complete quite a few beneficial projects. They replaced the foundation under the rental Cabins, constructed a new amphitheater, and built a state of the art septic system to serve the Cabins and the Lodge. In 2006 both the Lodge and Store were completely rebuilt to better serve the needs of the SHP residents. The project was funded by additional stock sales, donations, and income from the vineyard properties. In the spring of 2009 the rental cabins received a facelift on the side facing the river consisting of repaired framing, new windows and siding, and of course paint. Presently the Corporation is in the process of renovating the vineyard, temporarily custom farming it, and actively looking for a tenant.
The Corporation rents the community properties such as the beach, Lodge, Store, amphitheater, and clubhouse to the SHP Improvement Club for the benefit of the residents of SHP and their families. Hilton beach is rented to the Hilton Park Campground. The Cabins are rented through a vacation realtor in Guerneville. The Corporation continues to maintain and upgrade the community properties, supervise a fire prevention program, carry extensive insurance on its properties, maintain the septic system, maintain the trees and unpaved roads, supervise the vineyard, and is exploring options for wastewater treatment, all within a limited budget. All moneys earned by the Corporation have been reinvested for the betterment of the Park.
The mission statement of the Corp is:
