A Message from the President

CabinDear Friends and Neighbors,

We have made it through the holidays, spring is here, and summer at the park is just a couple of months away! As I grow older, the years seem to fly by. That's fine with me, as long as time slows down enough to enjoy some quality time at Summer Home Park. I look forward to reading a book on the beach, hearing the whistle blow, and having a burger at the lodge - only a few of my favorite things to do at SHP.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as president of the Improvement Club. Being on the board the past few years has given me a chance to give back to a place I have enjoyed all my life. It has enabled me to strengthen relationships with old friends, and spend time with new friends. It is a pleasure to work with a group of dedicated people who all share a love for Summer Home Park. I encourage everyone who loves being a part of the SHP community to get involved with the Improvement Club Board.

You will see on the calendar that there are a lot of fun family oriented events planned for this summer. Let's make summer 2007 at Summer Home Park one of the best ever!

Your SHPIC Board is a hard working one with great plans for summer 2006!! We’re looking forward to lots of good times at SHP in the warm months ahead and to sharing them with you!

See you at the beach!

Mike Martin
SHPIC President 2007

Greetings from the V.P.sBeach Umbrella

Summer is just around the corner and we couldn't be more excited; in addition to Maggie and Greta joining the Sandies and Rockies, the summer is shaping-up nicely.

Kathleen and Jesse will return as our beloved lodge operators. Can't wait to sample their rendition of muttong stew at "Ladies Night". Or perhaps french fries are the only taste of Europe we need at SHP.

This summer we will have two Activities Directors. Katie Kelly will lead the way in July and Kathleen Fox in August. We're very fortunate to have two talented and energetic young women entertaining the youngin's this summer.

See you on the beach!

Feeling Secure at SHP
By Kevin Kelly

There will be a 'changing of the guard' this summer, but not before we say goodbye and thank you to the old team: Otis and Wade. As you know, Otis and Wade have been in charge of security at Summer Home Park for many years. They have been there to see many of our children become young adults. They have also seen many of us young adults become not-so-young adults (no names please). Otis had a good understanding of the park and a great way with all of it's members and guests. He will be missed. Good lunck and best wishes to Otis and Wade.

First Alarm Security & Patrol will supply our new security. First Alarm is a professional organization serving Northern California since 1966. The Rohnert Park office is headed up by a retired Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy. They will be in the park every weekend from 9pm until 3am. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department will also assist them, after midnight to help make sure we all get to bed safe and sound.

Surf the Web

surf the webEveryone's favorite website: www.summerhomepark.com will now have a new Webmaster. Mary Christian is retiring from her post and handing the torch to Joe Sammut.

Many thanks to Mary for all her hard work designing and editing the site; and to Todd Binder, her predecessor. It's volunteers like Joe, Mary and Todd that make SHP so special.

So if you need to check the Social Calendar, display photos or post some news - log on!

Annual Spring Work Party

Sewer Update
by Jim Christian

cabinIn last year's newsletter, we advised on the formation of a SHP sewer committee in response to changing regulations. The update is that those regulations, though still not finalized, have been revised and do not present a reason for community action; hence the sewer committee has been disolved.

AB885 passed into law in 2000, directing the State Water Board to adopt a uniform statewide septic code, replacing all County regulations. Draft regs have been circulated at various points. The March 13, 2007 draft is different from the prior draft (September 2006) in several key areas to the Summer Home Park community.
  1. Prior drafts had required that all properties with 600' of an "impaired waterway" have a conforming or new system in-place within a couple of years, with recurring inspections and monitoring. 80% of SHP is withing this 600' zone. The current draft is much more favorable. In addition to being "impaired," now the particular case of impairment must be due to nitrogen or pathogens, and a study of the total pollution loads ("TMDL") has to be approved which contains a determination that on-site systems contribute to the impairment of the waterbody. Though the lower Russian River is listed as "impaired," "pathogens" are a listed reason for impairment for only a segment of the lower river in the Monte Rio area, and no TMDL study has been done and no determination made that on-site systems contribute to the impairment.
  2. The regulations had provided very short timefreames to comply with the new regulations for those within 600' of impaired waterbodies. The current draft is more generous, doubling the time to comply to 4 years, and allowing compliance by a legally-binding commitment to a community system also within 4 years (with hook up to the system to be completed not later than 9 years).

So, there is no immediate cause for community-wide concern or action; the "impairment" criteria have not been met and would take years, and there would be years to respond. We will, of course, monitor the final regs and advise of any changes. Individually, however SHP homeowners doing significant work involving permits should anticipate the high likelihood of required upgrading of septic or cesspool systems, which will be costly.

Muchas Gracias

Fire Season Update
by Mike Lantier

smokeyAfter meeting with Kevin Sawyer and the Corporation Board in the first part of the year, I pitched a program that would assist SHP in meeting the California Department of Forestry's (CDF) mandate of 100' fire clearance for cabins like ours in what is referred to as the Wildland Urban Interface. In plain English, wherever you have homes or cabins that are intermixed among dense timber or high vegetation, it is called the WUI. This means a lot of work for us in Summer Home Park.

The Corporation Board approved that under the direction of Kevin Sawyer, a group would be formed, called Fire Safe SHP, to work with the local Fire Safe Council of Sonoma County in discovering ways to help us get Summer Home Park into compliance with the Defensible Space law now being enforced in Sonoma County and the entire state. I have recruited Steve Finnegan of Hacienda Terrace and a member of the San Francisco Fire Dept. to help me assess the problem and develop a strategy of clearing out the massive amounts of "fuel" (i.e. dead trees, brush, scotch broom and leaves) from around our cabins and the Center. On Memorial Day weekend, I will present a powerpoint presentation to any and all who are concerned as I am that SHP will get wiped out if we had a fire.

The goal of Fire Safe SHP are simple: create "defensible space" around our cabins to prevent the spread of fire, explore ways to obtain grant money or self suportive means for the fire clearing operations, and promote an awareness of what fire means to the Park today, tomorrow and so on. This can't happen in one summer, so we will lay out a 5 to 10 year progression that I invite everyone to participate in.

Just DUE It!
by DeDee Sammut

Vista PointSHPIC dues are due by May 15, 2007 and considered delinquent if not paid by 4th of July. Again this year, names of homeowners not paying will be posted in the Center in July.

Most of you know and understand how important timely payments of dues from ALL our homeowners are for SHPIC to operate efficiently. Dues pay for so much of what makes SHP special. Your dues pay to grade the beach, clean our center, rent the movies, entertain our children and grandchildren, etc. So, if you have a neighbor in the Park who doesn't pay dues, perhaps because they don't understand why it is so important, please let a Board member know and we'll educate them.

This year we are making an effort to get new Associates in our membership. If you have adult children or other family members that love SHP and use the facilities, please encourage them to pay $100 and become Associate members. This is a great way for non cabin owners to be involved and part of all the activities of Summer Home Park. Associate memberships paid by May 12 will be included in the 2007 membership roster.

Memorial Book

memorial bookA Memorial Book is being assembled and will eventually be displayed in the SHP museum. The book will include information about members of the Summerhome Park community who have passed.

If you have information about a person from our community, that you would like included in this special book, please contact Sue George, Sue Rosen or Margie Krystofiak.

Renter Reminders

Do you rent your cabin? Some reminders for your renters, visitors, or newcomers to our Park include:
  • Boats, umbrellas, beach equiptment, etc are personally owned and not for general use.
  • No dogs on the beach, Sonoma County leash laws apply to all areas of SHP.
  • Garbage bins in the Center are not for personal use.
  • Lodge hours and planned activities (like arts & crafts and movies) are posted in the Center.
  • SHP is not just a park...it's a way of life.

Bon journo from your Lodge Operators

Jesse and I will be joining Summer Home Park again as Lodge Operators for a second season and are excited to see you all. We hope you had a wonderful winter away from Summer Home Park and we look forward to catching up with everyone. We have so many stories to tell you from our travels abroad this past winter. We traveled from Turkey to Spain and everywhere in between. It was a once in a lifetime adventure filled with many colorful stories. The best part of our traveling was trying new foods, which we are eager to mix into the Summer Home Park menu this summer. We hope you are all doing well and we will see you this summer.

Cabin News
by Margie Krystofiak

cabin newsIf you were in the Park this past fall, winter or spring you probably saw a lot of commotion around the SHP cabins. With the need for some Tender Loving Care, three teams of SHP residents volunteered to adop three of the four cabins to make them more appealing to renters. They each came up with a theme and refurbished each to make them fun places to vacation. On Memorial Day, May 28, you are invited to tour the newly remodeled cabins at 1pm. After you view tem you are sure to feel comfortable in having you In-laws or extended family stay there.
